On Sunday January 14, 2023 at the Houston Marathon, Emily Sisson in finishing second broke her existing American record in a time of 1 hour 6 minutes and 52 seconds. Her time broke her own record by 19 seconds which was previously set in Indianapolis last May. In doing so, Sisson became the first American woman to run under 17 minutes.
Sisson told ABC-13 in Houston, “I think I could have run a little more evenly so I’m hoping to run another half and run even faster”. “I wanted to try and go for the win but Hiwot Gebremaryam of Ethiopia, the winner was just too good today. My main focus was on competing and hoping the time was fast at the end of the day. I went a little too fast the first few miles so the last few miles I was definitely feeling it.”
Another women, former World 1500m Champion, Jenny Simpson also competed finishing fifth among the American Woman in a time of 1 Hour 10 minutes 35 seconds. With her time, Simpson qualified for the 2024 U.S. Olympic Trials Marathon by running faster than 1:12.
